USC Tightens Dining Hall Inspections After Student Videos Show Bugs and Mold

The university says additional checks are underway in response to the posts.

Overview

  • Student-shot videos from September through November captured a maggot, a stink bug, a worm-like creature, a fly on plates, and mold on bread at Everybody's Kitchen and the USC Village dining halls.
  • USC Hospitality says it safely serves 30,000 to 40,000 meals daily and points to consistent Los Angeles County Public Health inspection grades of A.
  • Officials say new inspection protocols are being implemented, and the produce-washing process has been refined following the reports.
  • County records show both facilities have maintained A grades since 2021, with Everybody's Kitchen earning an A on Oct. 8 despite four minor one-point violations noted.
  • USC Annenberg Media verified the videos were made by USC students, and a separate April complaint at USC Village was closed without further action after clarification by managers.
