USC PhD Student Accused of Drugging, Raping Women Allegedly Confessed, Prosecutors Say

Investigators are seeking additional victims.

Overview

  • Los Angeles County prosecutors charged Sizhe “Steven” Weng with forcible rape, rape by controlled substance, sodomy by controlled substance or anesthesia, and sexual penetration by controlled substance or anesthesia.
  • A Sept. 2 motion says he described multiple attacks to LAPD in detail after his Aug. 28 arrest, with incidents alleged on Dec. 10, 2021, Aug. 1, 2022, and during 2023–2024.
  • Prosecutors allege he spiked food and drinks, injected sedatives including midazolam, used sevoflurane, bound victims, and photographed them, with Polaroids, syringes, straps, cameras, dental devices, and electronic media seized from his home.
  • The investigation followed a lead from German authorities, and prosecutors say he obtained some drugs from a supplier in Germany.
  • He has pleaded not guilty and is held without bail after prosecutors cited a recorded remark about fleeing to China, and USC says he is barred from campus as authorities urge other victims to contact LAPD.
