USC Expected to Shift 2028 Home Games to SoFi as Olympic Track Blocks Coliseum

A $100 million elevated track planned for Olympic and Paralympic events leaves an unworkable two-week window before USC’s September opener.

Overview

  • Multiple reports say the Coliseum will not be ready for the start of the 2028 season, with construction of the temporary Olympic track set to begin after USC’s 2027 home schedule.
  • The structure is designed about 11 feet above the field with columns spaced roughly every 10 feet, and experts judge teardown and natural-grass restoration infeasible between Aug. 27 and Sept. 9.
  • USC and LA28 say they are coordinating logistics and will announce details when finalized, with a possible partial return to the Coliseum later in the fall still being evaluated.
  • SoFi Stadium is the primary — and reportedly the only — venue under discussion for 2028, and the Rose Bowl has not been seriously considered.
  • UCLA’s separate plan to relocate to SoFi has drawn lawsuits from Pasadena and the Rose Bowl Operating Company, adding legal and scheduling layers with the Rams and Chargers already at the venue.
