USC CT Scans Uncover New Details of Two Egyptian Priest Mummies for 3D Museum Display

Exhibit viewing begins Feb. 7 at the California Science Center.

Overview

  • Keck Medicine of USC performed full-body scans of Nes-Min and Nes-Hor using a state-of-the-art 320-slice CT scanner.
  • Each mummy was imaged while resting in the bottom half of its roughly 200‑pound sarcophagus, revealing facial features such as eyelids and lower lips.
  • Analysis indicates Nes-Min had a collapsed lumbar vertebra consistent with aging and was buried with a beaded net garment, colorful beads, scarab representations and a fish.
  • Nes-Hor showed dental disease and a severely deteriorated hip and was older at death than Nes-Min, according to the imaging team.
  • USC specialists created high-resolution 3D digital models and medical‑grade prints of spines, skulls, hips and select artifacts for display, illustrating the same tools surgeons use for preoperative planning.
