U.S. Vetoes UN Security Council Resolution Calling for Gaza Ceasefire

Washington demands Hamas condemnation with a call for its disarmament before supporting any truce proposal.

Protesters in Tel Aviv on May 24 demand the release of Israeli hostages kidnapped during the deadly October 7, 2023, attack on Israel by Hamas.

Overview

  • The Security Council vote was 14–1 against the resolution, with the U.S. casting its lone veto—the fifth time Washington has blocked a Gaza ceasefire text since October 2023.
  • Acting U.S. Ambassador Dorothy Shea said the draft was unacceptable because it failed to condemn Hamas or require its disarmament and withdrawal from Gaza.
  • Council members warned of a “catastrophic” humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where over 54,000 Palestinians have been killed and aid deliveries remain severely constrained.
  • The U.S. continues to back the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation’s new distribution system for aid deliveries, despite UN agencies’ objections over its neutrality and security risks.
  • Palestinian Envoy Riyad Mansour plans to take a similar ceasefire resolution to the UN General Assembly, where no member wields veto power.
