US Vetoes UN Ceasefire Resolution for Failing to Condemn Hamas

The decision stalls a widely backed ceasefire due to demands for explicit Hamas disarmament

Overview

  • The Security Council voted 14–1 in favor of an immediate, unconditional and permanent Gaza ceasefire before the US cast its lone veto on June 4, 2025.
  • Acting US Ambassador Dorothy Shea said the resolution was unacceptable because it omitted any condemnation of Hamas and did not require the group to disarm and withdraw from Gaza.
  • Israel’s UN envoy Danny Danon praised the veto for refusing to legitimize a measure he said would have rewarded Hamas and abandoned hostages.
  • Hamas officials denounced the US action as proof of American bias and argued it undermines international efforts to end the Gaza hostilities.
  • Gaza health authorities report over 54,000 Palestinian deaths in the conflict while the UN and aid groups criticize the US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation for non-neutral aid distribution.
