U.S. Transfers 14 Mexican Prisoners to Mexico Under Bilateral Treaty

The action reflects routine cooperation through a congressionally authorized program that manages inmate repatriations across more than 85 countries.

Overview

  • The 14 Mexican nationals, convicted of federal drug trafficking and unlawful firearm possession, were moved on December 5 to complete remaining terms ranging from 22 months to four and a half years in Mexico.
  • Each transfer was voluntary and proceeded only after approval by both governments under the prisoner-transfer treaty.
  • The DOJ’s Office of International Affairs executed the operation through its International Prisoner Transfer Unit with support from the Bureau of Prisons.
  • This was the third U.S.-to-Mexico transfer in 2025, following earlier groups repatriated in April and August.
  • In a reciprocal move, U.S. authorities received three Americans convicted abroad of controlled-substance trafficking to serve their sentences in the United States.
