- NHTSA estimates 17,140 people died in crashes from January through June 2025, down from 18,680 a year earlier, a decline of 1,540.
- The fatality rate is the lowest for a first half since 2014 even as vehicle miles traveled rose about 1%, or roughly 12.1 billion miles.
- Projected declines were recorded in 38 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, while 11 states saw increases.
- June had the most estimated fatalities at 3,040 and February the fewest at 2,455.
- Texas, California and Florida recorded the highest totals, with Texas down by 137 deaths compared with the same period in 2024.
