U.S. Traffic Deaths Decrease for Second Consecutive Year

Despite an increase in miles driven, fatalities on the road dropped in 2023.

U.S. traffic deaths decreased by 3.6% in 2023, with 40,990 fatalities reported.
The decline in traffic deaths marks the second consecutive year of reduction.
Vehicle miles traveled in 2023 increased by about 2.1%, or 67.5 billion miles.
Despite the overall decrease, some states like Washington, Idaho, North Carolina, Rhode Island, and Washington, D.C., saw increases in traffic fatalities.
The NHTSA launched a new campaign, 'Put the Phone Away or Pay,' to combat distracted driving.
