U.S. to Unveil Global Nuclear Fusion Strategy at COP28
John Kerry's announcement comes amid significant advancements and challenges in the quest for commercial fusion power.
- U.S. Special Envoy on Climate Change John Kerry is set to announce the first global strategy for commercializing nuclear fusion power at the COP28 summit in Dubai.
- Kerry will make the announcement during a tour of the Commonwealth Fusion Systems facility near Boston, alongside Claudio Descalzi, the CEO of Italian energy giant Eni, which is pursuing four fusion power pilot projects.
- Last year, scientists at the Department of Energy’s National Ignition Facility in California achieved 'net energy gain' from fusion for the first time, a major breakthrough demonstrating that fusion ignition is attainable in a controlled environment.
- Despite the breakthrough, significant hurdles remain for commercial fusion power, including the need for continuous fusion ignitions per minute and the ability to generate greater than 100% of the energy of the ignition reaction.
- In 2023, international fusion companies have garnered about $1.4 billion in investments, down from about $2.83 billion in new investment last year, but the number of companies receiving investments rose to 43 from 33, spanning a dozen countries.
