U.S. to Revoke Colombian President Petro’s Visa After New York Protest

The State Department says his call for U.S. soldiers to disobey orders constituted reckless and incendiary conduct.

Overview

  • The State Department announced on X that it will revoke Gustavo Petro’s U.S. visa, accusing him of urging American soldiers to disobey orders and incite violence.
  • While in New York for the UN General Assembly, Petro joined a pro-Palestinian protest with musician Roger Waters and called for an “army” to liberate Palestine, declaring, “Disobey the order of Trump.”
  • Colombia’s presidency said Petro left the United States and was on a flight to Bogota on Friday night.
  • Petro noted that he also holds Italian nationality, which he said in principle exempts him from needing a U.S. visa to enter the country.
  • The move deepens tensions that have grown since President Trump returned to office, following Petro’s UN speech this week urging a legal action over U.S. military strikes on boats in the Caribbean.
