US to Reopen Border Livestock Ports After Eight Weeks Without Screwworm Spread

  • Five border ports will reopen on a staggered schedule from July 7 through mid-September, beginning with Douglas, Arizona
  • Initial import eligibility will be restricted to cattle and bison born and raised in Sonora or Chihuahua or treated according to screwworm protocols
  • Equines from any region of Mexico may enter under a seven-day quarantine and compliance with equine screwworm measures
  • The USDA has released more than 100 million sterile male flies each week to disrupt screwworm reproduction and block northward spread
