U.S. To Impose 10% Tariff on Wood Imports Starting Oct. 14

The proclamation uses Section 232 national security authority to reinforce domestic wood supply chains.

Overview

  • President Trump signed the tariff proclamation on Sept. 29.
  • Selected categories — including upholstered wooden furniture, kitchen shelving, washstands and related parts — will carry a 25% rate.
  • On Jan. 1, rates are scheduled to rise to 30% for upholstered wood furniture and 50% for kitchen shelving and similar items.
  • Existing arrangements cap tariff exposure for Japan and the EU at 15% and for the United Kingdom at 10%, with those limits maintained after the increases.
  • The White House says the move supports domestic producers and job creation.
