Overview
- The United States will receive an Indian delegation in Washington later this month to move the February trade framework toward implementation, in what Ambassador Sergio Gor called Thursday's highly productive follow-up to his meeting with USTR Jamieson Greer.
- Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri launched the India–U.S. Trade Facilitation Portal during a three-day visit that also reviews cooperation in trade, defense, and critical technologies.
- The framework reduces average U.S. tariffs on Indian goods to about 18% from roughly 50% and includes a $500 billion Indian investment pledge over five years across energy, aviation, metals, coal, and technology.
- A White House fact sheet ties parts of the deal to India cutting purchases of Russian oil, with narrow allowances during the Iran conflict that the U.S. says do not provide revenue to Moscow.
- U.S. court and policy shifts on tariff authority in February created new hurdles, so both sides are now working through rules of origin and non-tariff barriers, and Gor has also met Treasury and State leaders to coordinate the path forward.
