US to Destroy $9.7 Million of Contraceptives Stored in Belgium

Humanitarian groups warn the destruction will endanger women’s health in crisis regions

Overview

  • The State Department has authorized the incineration of €167,000 in contraceptive supplies and intends to destroy the remaining $9.7 million by the end of July.
  • The stock, originating from expired USAID contracts under the previous administration, has been held since January in a warehouse in Geel, Belgium.
  • Médecins Sans Frontières labeled the decision a reckless and harmful act against women and girls, noting that the earliest expiry dates extend to 2027.
  • The International Planned Parenthood Federation offered to collect and redistribute the contraceptives at no cost, but the US government declined the proposal.
  • The Belgian Foreign Ministry says it has explored all possible alternatives to prevent the destruction yet continues to seek viable solutions.
