U.S. to Deploy Typhon Missile System to Japan for September Exercise

Russia threatens “military-technical” measures following Japan’s temporary authorization.

Overview

  • U.S. Army Pacific confirmed the Typhon mid-range system will participate in Resolute Dragon 25 from September 11 to 25 across Japan.
  • The Third Multi-Domain Task Force will position the battery at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, with the system to depart after the drill.
  • Officials have not said whether any live-fire events will occur during the exercise.
  • The launcher can fire Tomahawk cruise missiles of roughly 1,000 miles in range and SM-6 missiles of about 290 miles, adding a ground-based precision-strike option.
  • Beijing and Moscow criticized the plan, and Russia’s foreign ministry warned of unspecified countermeasures while urging Japan to reconsider.
