US Tech Giants Account for Nearly Half of France’s Internet Traffic

  • Five US-based platforms—Netflix, Akamai, Amazon (including Twitch), Google and Meta—made up about 47% of inbound traffic at France’s four largest ISPs in 2024.
  • Netflix remained the largest single contributor at 12.3%, down from nearly 20% in late 2022 as it optimized data use through advanced compression technology and compatibility with faster TV chipsets.
  • Akamai held 12.2% of inbound traffic while Amazon (9.9%), Google (7.3%) and Meta (5.4%) rounded out the top five sources.
  • Total internet throughput in France climbed 9.2% to reach 50.8 Tbps by the end of 2024 as streaming and cloud services expanded.
  • Arcep’s mid-2025 report warns that opaque generative AI systems risk reinforcing user bias and urges the European Commission to impose regulations on cloud and AI services.
