U.S. Targets Myanmar Broker, DPRK Operatives in Sanctions Over North Korea Weapons Funding

The action uses U.S. sanctions authorities to squeeze intermediaries that fund North Korea’s weapons programs.

Overview

  • Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control designated six targets — one Myanmar company and five individuals — for facilitating arms deals and revenue generation for the DPRK.
  • The designations include Royal Shune Lei Company Limited and Myanmar nationals Kyaw Thu Myo Myint, Tin Myo Aung, and Aung Ko Ko Oo.
  • Those listed also include Kim Yong Ju, the Beijing-based deputy representative of KOMID, and Nam Chol Ung, an RGB representative tied to laundering earnings through businesses across Southeast Asia.
  • U.S. officials said the measures seek to disrupt weapons sales to Myanmar’s military, which has carried out indiscriminate strikes against civilians since the 2021 coup.
  • Treasury cited Executive Orders 13687, 13551, and 14014 for the action, and the State Department pointed to cooperation with partners through the G7+ DPRK Sanctions Contact Group.
