U.S. Sympathy Shifts Toward Palestinians as Majority Opposes New Aid to Israel

A Times/Siena survey points to Democrats plus younger voters as the main drivers.

Overview

  • Conducted Sept. 22–27 before Israel accepted President Donald Trump's Gaza proposal, the Times/Siena poll finds 35% sympathize more with Palestinians versus 34% with Israelis.
  • Fifty-one percent of registered voters disapprove of providing additional U.S. economic and military support to Israel.
  • Democrats now sympathize more with Palestinians by 54% to 13% for Israel, while Republicans still favor Israel 64% to 9% though support has slipped since 2023.
  • Younger voters lead the shift, with 68% of those aged 18–29 opposing more U.S. aid and roughly 61% saying they sympathize more with Palestinians.
  • Perceptions of Israeli conduct have hardened, with 40% saying Israel is intentionally killing civilians and 62% saying it is not taking enough precautions, and about six in 10 want the Gaza campaign halted even without freeing all hostages or defeating Hamas.
