U.S. Suicide Rates Hit Record High in 2022

Despite overall increase, rates among children and young adults show signs of improvement

Suicide rates in the U.S. reached an all-time high in 2022, with over 49,000 deaths, marking a 3% increase from 2021.
The suicide rate among men was four times higher than women, with elderly men at the highest risk.
Despite the overall increase, suicide rates among children and young adults showed signs of improvement, with an 18% drop among 10-14 year-olds and a 9% drop among 15-24 year-olds.
Suicide rates increased for all age groups above 35, with the highest rate among those aged 75 and older.
American Indians/Alaska Natives had the highest suicide rate among racial/ethnic groups, but it was the only group to experience a decline in rates.
