US suicide deaths reach record high in 2022, driven by increase in older adults and gun violence

Nearly 50,000 Americans died by suicide in 2022, the highest number ever recorded.
Suicide rates increased the most among adults aged 65 and older, up over 8% from 2021.
Firearms were involved in over half of suicides, and the overall gun suicide rate also reached a record high.
The launch of the 988 crisis hotline received millions of contacts in its first year, but more prevention resources are still needed.
While most groups saw increases, suicides declined among American Indians/Alaska Natives and youth aged 10-24.
