U.S. Strikes Iran as Tehran Declares Strait of Hormuz Closed

The exchange raises the risk of a wider regional war and threatens global energy and shipping through a chokepoint that carries about one‑fifth of traded oil.

Overview

  • U.S. Central Command said President Trump ordered fresh strikes and U.S. forces hit roughly 140 Iranian military targets on Sunday to degrade missile, drone, naval and coastal surveillance capabilities.
  • Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it closed the Strait of Hormuz after firing on a Cyprus‑flagged container ship that CENTCOM says was badly damaged and whose crew abandoned ship, with one crew member reported missing.
