Overview

  • The advisory was reissued on May 29 after a periodic review, reducing Jamaica from Level 3: Reconsider Travel to Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution.
  • Key neighborhoods across nine parishes, including parts of Kingston, Montego Bay and Spanish Town, remain designated Level 4 “Do Not Travel” zones for U.S. government personnel.
  • The updated guidance cites Jamaica’s high homicide rate, common armed robberies and sexual assaults, uneven emergency response and gaps in medical infrastructure.
  • The downgrade follows Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s March visit, when he and Jamaican leaders launched joint security programs to combat gang activity and improve forensic capacity.
  • Jamaica’s government, targeting 5 million tourists and $5 billion in revenue this year, has welcomed the advisory change as recognition of its public safety progress.
