US State Department Issues State-Level Mexico Travel Advisory, Flags Six ‘Do Not Travel’ States

Mexico now faces an overall Level 2 advisory with six states designated off-limits under limited US consular support.

Overview

  • The update assigns Mexico a Level 2 risk warning Americans of terrorism, kidnapping and violent crime.
  • Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas and Zacatecas are listed as Level 4 ‘Do Not Travel’ zones due to cartel, gang and terrorist violence.
  • Baja California, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Morelos and Sonora carry Level 3 ‘Reconsider Travel’ advisories over organized crime clashes.
  • Campeche and Yucatán received Level 1 ‘Exercise Normal Precautions’ ratings while Mexico City and Quintana Roo remain at Level 2.
  • The advisory prohibits US government employees from high-risk areas and urges travelers to enroll in STEP, avoid solo or nighttime travel and comply with checkpoints given limited consular support.
