U.S. Sets Nov. 7 End to Venezuela TPS, Putting Hundreds of Thousands at Risk

Legal groups say beneficiaries with pending asylum or family petitions can continue their cases despite the program’s termination.

Overview

  • DHS and USCIS confirmed the 2021 TPS designation for Venezuela will expire at 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 7, 2025.
  • Roughly 600,000 people covered under the 2021 and 2023 designations face loss of work permits, travel authorization, and protection from removal.
  • Individuals with other immigration processes pending, such as asylum applications, family petitions, or certain visas, are not automatically subject to deportation.
  • The Supreme Court on Oct. 3 allowed the administration to suspend a district court’s protections for beneficiaries, clearing the way for termination.
  • DHS said conditions in Venezuela no longer justify TPS, while groups including RAICES, Catholic Charities, and the American Immigration Council are expanding free legal guidance and clinics.
