U.S. Sets 100% Tariff on Drug Imports With New Duties on Furniture and Heavy Trucks

The policy escalates sector-focused trade measures, using carve-outs for companies building U.S. plants to steer production onshore.

Overview

  • Effective October 1, pharmaceuticals entering the United States face a 100% tariff, with exemptions for manufacturers that have started constructing production facilities in the country.
  • Also from October 1, the U.S. will levy 50% on kitchen and bathroom cabinets, 30% on upholstered furniture, and 25% on heavy trucks.
  • Auto tariffs on vehicles from the European Union are set at 15% retroactive to August 1 under a summer deal, as the EU begins lifting selected tariffs on U.S. industrial goods.
  • U.S. steel and aluminium duties of 50% remain in force, while courts have found many earlier tariff packages unlawful and appeals, including a Supreme Court review, are pending.
  • Germany and India are notably exposed—Germany shipped about €27 billion in pharmaceuticals to the U.S. in 2024—and it was not immediately clear whether the new charges would be added to existing duties.
