Overview

  • The Trump administration approved the package this week to support Lebanon’s security forces, according to sources in Washington and Beirut.
  • The funds total $230 million, with $190 million for the Lebanese Armed Forces and $40 million for the Internal Security Forces, a Lebanese source said.
  • Democratic congressional aides said the money was released just before the U.S. fiscal year ended on September 30.
  • A Lebanese source said the support is meant to let the Internal Security Forces take on more internal policing so the army can focus on other critical missions.
  • The push follows an August 5 directive for an army-led plan to consolidate weapons under state control by year-end, while Hezbollah continues to reject disarmament during ongoing cross-border conflict.
