U.S. Sanctions Sudan’s Military Chief for War Crimes

The Biden administration targets General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan for atrocities in Sudan’s ongoing civil war, including attacks on civilians and blocking humanitarian aid.

  • The U.S. imposed sanctions on Sudanese Armed Forces leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, accusing him of targeting civilians, bombing schools, and using starvation as a war tactic.
  • The sanctions freeze Burhan’s U.S.-based assets and bar American entities from conducting business with him or his affiliates.
  • This action follows similar sanctions on Rapid Support Forces (RSF) leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, who has been accused of genocide in Darfur and other human rights abuses.
  • The Sudan conflict, which began in April 2023, has caused over 150,000 deaths, displaced more than 12 million people, and created the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.
  • The U.S. stated that neither Burhan nor Dagalo is fit to govern Sudan and expressed ongoing support for a democratic, civilian-led transition in the country.
