Overview

  • The Treasury Department designated Los Chapitos as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist entity, blocking their U.S. assets and barring Americans from dealings.
  • Archivaldo Ivan Guzman Salazar and Jesus Alfredo Guzman Salazar were named as fugitive cartel leaders with up to $10 million each offered for information leading to their arrest or conviction.
  • Sanctions also target a Mazatlan-based network of Los Chapitos associates accused of drug trafficking, extortion, kidnapping and money laundering.
  • U.S. authorities accuse Los Chapitos of directing a significant share of the cartel’s fentanyl shipments into the United States, exacerbating the opioid crisis.
  • These actions follow February’s Foreign Terrorist Organization designation of the Sinaloa Cartel and aim to sever cartel funding and curb associated violence, including the killing of U.S. Marine veteran Nicholas Quets.
