US Sanctions Cryptocurrency Mixer Sinbad for Alleged North Korea Ties

Action follows Sinbad's processing of stolen cryptocurrency and involvement in various illicit activities, with its services now seized in a coordinated international law-enforcement action.

  • US Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on virtual currency mixer Sinbad for processing millions of dollars worth of cryptocurrency stolen by North Korea-linked Lazarus Group.
  • Sinbad is believed to be a successor to the Blender mixer, which was also sanctioned by the US last year for similar accusations.
  • Sinbad's services have been seized as part of a coordinated law-enforcement action between the FBI and agencies in Finland and the Netherlands.
  • Sinbad is also used by cybercriminals to obscure transactions linked to activities such as sanctions evasion, drug trafficking and the purchase of child sexual abuse materials.
  • The action freezes any US assets of Sinbad and bars Americans from dealing with it, with those engaging in certain transactions with the mixer also at risk of being hit with sanctions.
