U.S., ROK Engineers Complete Combined Namhan River Crossing Using Linked KM3 and IRB

Commanders cast the successful crossing as a concrete gain in interoperability.

Overview

  • The wet-gap operation took place Aug. 27 in Yeoju-si during the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise, enabling maneuver elements to traverse the Namhan River.
  • ROK KM3 amphibious bridging vehicles were connected with U.S. Improved Ribbon Bridge sections to form a continuous floating span.
  • An M1126 Stryker and other maneuver forces crossed the completed bridge, demonstrating load capacity and mobility for armored units.
  • Participating units included the U.S. 814th Multi-Role Bridging Company and 11th Engineer Battalion alongside the ROKA 312th Wet Gap Battalion and Mechanized Wet-gap Company under the combined division.
  • Leaders reported improved command-and-control, lessons learned on operating each other’s equipment and tactics, and the rollout of first-ever combined maintenance training to meet the exercise’s significant logistical demands.
