U.S. Repatriates American Child From ISIS-Linked Camp in Syria

It underscores U.S. appeals for origin countries to bring home vulnerable nationals from camps with dire conditions.

Overview

  • Last week the United States repatriated an unaccompanied American minor from a Syrian displaced persons camp and reunited the child with their family.
  • The operation involved interagency coordination by the State Department, FBI, Customs and Border Protection, Department of Defense and local partner the Syrian Democratic Forces.
  • Roughly 30,000 individuals from more than 70 countries remain in the al-Hol and Roj camps, the majority of whom are children under the age of 12.
  • The State Department says repatriation, rehabilitation, reintegration and accountability by countries of origin offer the only durable solution to the humanitarian and security crisis.
