Overview

  • The State Department set a Level 2 ‘exercise increased caution’ advisory for all of Mexico due to terrorism, kidnapping and violent crime risks.
  • Six states—Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas and Zacatecas—are classified Level 4 ‘Do Not Travel’ over cartel and gang violence tied to terrorist activities.
  • States such as Baja California, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Morelos and Sonora are labeled Level 3 ‘Reconsider Travel’ because of organized crime clashes and targeted violence.
  • The advisory warns that US government employees cannot travel to high-risk areas and that consular assistance may be limited or unavailable in those regions.
  • Officials advise travelers to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, purchase travel insurance, avoid solo or after-dark travel, comply with road checkpoints and use only regulated taxi or ride-share services.
