Germany's Exports Hit Record in June as Industry Shows Patchy Recovery

Rising exports plus higher orders point to fragile momentum that could be undone by weak investment, low Rhine levels, energy risks

Overview

  • Citing Friday's Destatis release, seasonally adjusted goods exports in June reached 139.3 billion euros, the highest monthly value on record and the fifth straight monthly gain.
  • Production in the producing sector rose 0.2% month on month and 0.7% in the April–June three‑month comparison, with the auto and other vehicle sectors driving the increase while machinery output fell.
  • Manufacturing new orders surprised to the upside with a 3.1% monthly rise driven partly by several large contracts, and preliminary data show Q2 GDP grew 0.2% quarter on quarter.
  • Trade flows shifted: exports to EU markets strengthened but exports to the United States fell sharply, imports—notably from China—rose strongly, and the seasonally adjusted trade surplus narrowed to 15.4 billion euros.
  • Policy support from planned special funds could add roughly 1.5% of GDP in fiscal impulse but economists warn the gains are concentrated and vulnerable to low Rhine water levels, energy and transport disruptions, and weak private investment, which could limit durable recovery and affect supply chains and jobs.
