U.S., Partners Launch New Large-Scale Strikes on ISIS Across Syria

CENTCOM says the campaign seeks to prevent further attacks following the Dec. 13 Palmyra ambush that killed three Americans.

Overview

  • U.S. Central Command said forces carried out coordinated strikes at about 12:30 p.m. ET against ISIS targets throughout Syria with partner forces.
  • Reporting cited more than 90 precision munitions launched by over two dozen aircraft against more than 35 targets in the latest operation.
  • The strikes are part of Operation Hawkeye Strike, a sustained campaign ordered on Dec. 19 at President Donald Trump’s direction after the Palmyra attack.
  • CENTCOM released strike footage but did not identify partner forces, specify target locations, or provide casualty or damage assessments.
  • The December ambush killed Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres Tovar, Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, and civilian interpreter Ayad Mansoor Sakat, according to the U.S. military.
