U.S. Overhauls Dietary Guidelines, Elevating Protein and Endorsing Full-Fat Dairy

Federal programs will adopt the higher-protein, inverted-pyramid guidance over the next two years.

Overview

  • New targets recommend 1.2–1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, with protein included at every meal.
  • The guidance encourages more meat, including red meat, and full-fat dairy while retaining a 10% cap on saturated fat.
  • Stronger limits call for cutting ultraprocessed foods, added sugars to no more than 10 grams per meal, and sodium to under 2,300 mg a day for most adults.
  • The White House set a two-year rollout across school meals, SNAP and other federal feeding programs.
  • Reactions were split, with the AMA welcoming the focus on ultraprocessed foods and cardiology-oriented groups and nutrition scholars warning about higher protein and animal fats, and Argentina initiated a review of its own dietary guidance.
