U.S. Opens Safety Probe Into Nearly 2.9 Million Teslas Over FSD Traffic Violations

The preliminary review is the first step toward a possible recall.

Overview

  • NHTSA’s defects office is examining 2,882,566 Teslas equipped with FSD (Supervised) or FSD (Beta) after 58 reported incidents linked to the system.
  • The agency cites 14 crashes and 23 injuries, including six cases where cars proceeded into intersections against red lights and then collided, four with injuries.
  • Investigators are reviewing allegations of wrong‑way lane entries, crossing double‑yellow lines, misuse of turn or through lanes, and limited warning or intervention time for drivers.
  • Multiple incidents occurred at the same Joppa, Maryland intersection, and the agency says Tesla has taken action to address that location.
  • The evaluation will assess how FSD detects and responds to traffic signals, lane markings, wrong‑way signs and railroad crossings, and Tesla released an updated FSD version 14.1 this week.
