Overview

  • Main-draw play began Sunday for the first time, extending the tournament to 15 days as USTA officials said the extra day creates more onsite opportunities and a second opening weekend.
  • Some players objected to the shift, with Jessica Pegula saying many were not in favor, particularly those competing at high-level events the week before a Grand Slam.
  • Returning on a wild card at age 45, Venus Williams lost to No. 11 seed Karolína Muchová 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, though she claimed her first US Open set since 2020 before fading in the decider.
  • Australian Open champion and No. 6 seed Madison Keys was upset by Mexico’s Renata Zarazúa 6-7 (10), 7-6 (3), 7-5, committing 89 unforced errors and 14 double faults in a three-hour match.
  • Novak Djokovic opened with a straight-sets win over Learner Tien, and defending champion Jannik Sinner is slated to launch his title defense on Tuesday.
