Overview
- The State Department approved possible Foreign Military Sales of 48 M142 HIMARS to Australia valued at an estimated $705 million and 26 HIMARS to Canada valued at an estimated $1.75 billion.
- Canada’s request includes a large munitions loadout: 132 M31A2 GMLRS Unitary pods, 132 M30A2 GMLRS Alternative Warhead pods, 32 M403 Extended Range AW pods, 32 M404 Extended Range Unitary pods, and 64 M57 ATACMS pods, plus radios, training, and logistics support.
- Australia’s package covers launchers and support equipment such as resupply vehicles, trailers, practice rocket pods, communications gear, spares, and technical and logistics services, with principal contractors named as Lockheed Martin, L3Harris, Leonardo DRS, and Oshkosh.
- DSCA said the sales would enhance Australia’s homeland defense and interoperability with U.S. and allied forces and improve Canada’s contribution to collective defense and NATO plans, while not altering the basic military balance.
- The proposed transfers are not final and remain subject to congressional review, contracting, and scheduling, with Canada’s implementation plan calling for periodic U.S. government and contractor visits for fielding and training.
