U.S. Notifies Congress of $3.42 Billion Proposal to Sell 12 F-16 Block 70 Jets to Peru

Congressional review now begins on a package competing with Gripen and Rafale proposals.

Overview

  • Defense Security Cooperation Agency filed the required notification for a possible Foreign Military Sale, a procedural step that allows talks but does not create a contract.
  • The proposed package covers 10 F-16C and 2 F-16D Block 70 aircraft with AESA radars, F110 engines, AMRAAM and Sidewinder missiles, training and support equipment.
  • Lockheed Martin, General Electric Aerospace and RTX are named as principal contractors, and the U.S. government reports no offset agreements at this stage.
  • Washington says the sale would strengthen Peru’s air defense and advance U.S. policy goals without changing the region’s basic military balance.
  • Peru has a stated need for 24 new fighters within about $3.5 billion, so the 12-jet offer would require further decisions, with price listed as a maximum estimate and negotiations and a final Peruvian decision still pending.
