Overview

  • A MH-60S Sea Hawk assigned to the carrier USS George H.W. Bush made an emergency water landing in the Arabian Sea at about 3:30 a.m. Eastern on Wednesday.
  • Three of the helicopter’s four crew members were recovered and are in stable condition aboard the carrier while one aircrewman remains missing and search operations continue.
  • U.S. 5th Fleet said there is no indication the landing was caused by hostile action and the Navy has opened a formal investigation into the cause.
  • The helicopter was operating from the George H.W. Bush, which has been deployed to the Middle East since late April as one of two U.S. carriers in the region.
  • The ditching adds to a recent string of U.S. military aviation incidents in the theatre and may prompt renewed scrutiny of carrier flight operations and search-and-rescue procedures.
