U.S. Navy Officer Released from Custody After Nearly 18 Months

Lt. Ridge Alkonis, jailed in Japan for a fatal car accident, was granted full parole by the U.S. with no supervision upon his release.

U.S. Navy officer Lt. Ridge Alkonis, who was jailed in Japan for a fatal car accident, has been released from U.S. custody after nearly 18 months of imprisonment.
Alkonis was serving at a Japanese naval base in 2021 when he fell asleep at the wheel, resulting in a crash that killed two pedestrians.
He was transferred from Japan's custody to the U.S. in mid-December and had been serving in a federal prison in Los Angeles, California.
Alkonis was granted full parole by the U.S. on Friday morning, with no supervision upon his release.
His family had argued that Alkonis was ill, not negligent, and had offered the victims' families over $1 million in restitution.
