Overview
- The Navy formally placed USS Ted Stevens (DDG 128) into active service during a commissioning ceremony in Whittier, Alaska on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2026.
- USS Ted Stevens is a Flight III Arleigh Burke–class destroyer built around the AN/SPY-6(V)1 Air and Missile Defense Radar and Aegis Baseline 10 combat system to improve simultaneous anti-air and ballistic missile defense.
- The ship’s sponsors, Catherine Ann Stevens, Susan Stevens Covich and Lily Stevens Becker, gave the traditional order to “man our ship and bring her to life” as the crew ran aboard to set watch and activate the systems.
- Following post-commissioning work and trials the destroyer will transit to its permanent homeport in Norfolk, Virginia, where the crew will prepare the ship for worldwide deployments.
- The commissioning highlights the Navy’s push to field higher-powered radars and upgraded electrical and cooling systems on Flight III destroyers to strengthen high-latitude presence, homeland defense, and carrier task force protection.
