U.S. Naval Academy Removes Commandant After Less Than Six Months

The academy cited a routine "loss of confidence" rationale without explaining the decision.

Overview

  • Superintendent Lt. Gen. Michael Borgschulte relieved Capt. Gilbert Clark Jr. on Nov. 24 for a loss of confidence in his ability to lead the Brigade of Midshipmen.
  • Deputy commandant Capt. Austin Jackson was appointed interim commandant; the Navy SEAL previously served as a troop commander for SEAL Team 6.
  • In the commandant role, the officer oversees the day-to-day conduct, military training and professional development of roughly 4,400 midshipmen.
  • The Navy said it maintains the highest standards for leaders and holds them accountable when those standards are not met.
  • Clark’s removal marks the third senior leadership change at the academy in about six months, following Vice Adm. Yvette Davids’ reassignment and Borgschulte’s arrival as superintendent in August.
