Overview
- Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the groups are now Specially Designated Global Terrorists and that formal Foreign Terrorist Organization listings are set to take effect on Nov. 20.
- The organizations are Antifa Ost in Germany, the Informal Anarchist Federation/International Revolutionary Front in Italy, and Greece-based Armed Proletarian Justice and Revolutionary Class Self-Defense.
- The designations block any U.S. assets, make it a crime for U.S. persons to provide material support, and can bar members from entering the United States.
- U.S. officials cited specific attacks, including assaults in Germany and Budapest tied to Antifa Ost, long-running bomb threats and letter bombs attributed to FAI/FRI in Italy, and IED attacks in Greece claimed by the two Greek groups.
- The move follows President Donald Trump’s September order labeling Antifa a domestic terrorist organization, has backing from allied Republicans such as Sen. Eric Schmitt, and comes as some European authorities pursue related cases or review the U.S. action.
