US Missile Startup Opens Leipzig Site to Assemble Long-Range Anthem

Officials say the project is meant to bolster European deterrence by enabling lower-cost, large-scale missile assembly for regional customers.

Overview

  • Covenant formally opened a production hall in northern Leipzig on Monday and announced plans to begin Anthem assembly in 2027 with targets of 1,000 missiles in the first year and 5,000 in 2028, subject to local permit approval for changing the hall’s use to manufacturing.
  • Company and government statements describe Anthem as a precision deep-strike cruise missile with a payload capacity of about 200 kilograms and a range of well over 1,000 kilometres.
  • Covenant says missiles will be assembled in Leipzig but that explosive warheads will be fitted later at customer sites rather than in the Leipzig facility.
  • The startup reports more than $250 million raised from investors including Founders Fund and offers Anthem at a reported six-figure price per unit, a cost the company says could allow European armies to build larger stockpiles.
  • Saxony and federal officials welcomed the site as a deterrence measure, the firm plans to hire several hundred workers, and local critics have raised protests while authorities complete the required reclassification and safety reviews.
