U.S. Mint Issues 'Enduring Liberty' Half Dollar Marking 9/11 25th Anniversary

The U.S. Mint is commemorating the lives lost from the Al-Qaeda terrorist attack on 9/11 with a new half-dollar coin displaying the date of the travesty encircled by the phrase “NEVER FORGET.”

Overview

  • The U.S. Mint unveiled the Semiquincentennial Enduring Liberty Half Dollar on Sept. 10 and opened preorders that will remain available through Sept. 25 with shipping expected to begin Dec. 3.
  • The Mint presented 2,983 half dollars to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum on the anniversary, a symbolic gift of one coin for each person killed in the 1993 bombing and the 2001 attacks.
  • The obverse shows a close-up of the Statue of Liberty with inscriptions including "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "1776 ~ 2026," while the reverse depicts Liberty passing a torch and bears the motto "KNOWLEDGE IS THE ONLY GUARDIAN OF TRUE LIBERTY."
  • The circulating-quality coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint and are offered for preorder on the Mint’s website in 20-coin rolls at $40 and 100-coin bags at $100, with no public household order limits listed on the product page.
