U.S. Military Authorized to Detain Migrants in New Mexico Border Zone

The New Mexico National Defense Area, now under Fort Huachuca’s jurisdiction, allows military personnel to conduct patrols, searches, and temporary detentions before transferring migrants to law enforcement.

Overview

  • The Department of Defense has transferred a 60-foot-wide border zone in New Mexico to Fort Huachuca, granting the military expanded jurisdiction over the area.
  • Joint Task Force-Southern is now authorized to patrol, search, and temporarily detain migrants in the New Mexico National Defense Area.
  • Detained individuals will be handed over to U.S. Customs and Border Protection or other law enforcement agencies for further processing.
  • The Army has also taken control of 110,000 acres of federal land along the southern border for border security operations, under a three-year jurisdiction transfer agreement.
  • Enhanced detection and monitoring efforts include vehicle and foot patrols, rotary-wing flights, and fixed surveillance operations to curb illegal crossings and trafficking.
