U.S. Measles Cases Top 2,000 as South Carolina and ArizonaUtah Outbreaks Expand

Sustained transmission through late January could end the nation's 25-year measles elimination status.

Overview

  • CDC has recorded 2,012 cases as of Dec. 23 and 2,065 as of Dec. 30, the highest yearly total since 1992.
  • South Carolina’s upstate outbreak has reached nearly 180 cases with 20 added since Friday, and 287 people are under quarantine.
  • The ArizonaUtah border cluster has grown to more than 350 combined cases this year, with cases still being added.
  • About 93% of infections were in people who were unvaccinated or had unknown vaccination status, and three deaths were confirmed in 2025.
  • Fifty outbreaks accounted for 87% of cases as kindergarten MMR coverage slipped to about 92.5%, below the 95% level needed to prevent spread.
