U.S. Measles Cases Top 2,000 as Outbreaks Put Elimination Status at Risk

Public health officials warn sustained transmission for about three more weeks could cost the nation its 25-year measles elimination designation.

Overview

  • CDC data show 2,065 measles cases in 2025, the most in more than three decades and far above the 285 reported in 2024.
  • Transmission is concentrated in Texas with 803 cases, with Arizona, South Carolina, Utah and New Mexico each exceeding 100 cases.
  • South Carolina logged 20 new cases since Friday for a total of 179 this year, with 287 people under quarantine and further growth expected into January.
  • Fifty outbreaks account for 87% of cases this year, and 93% of infections involve people who are unvaccinated or whose vaccination status is unknown.
  • Three deaths have been confirmed in 2025, including two unvaccinated school-aged children in West Texas, as holiday travel contributed to additional exposures.
